Consider the Rubicon Crossed

Sarah Palin drops the t-bomb on Barack:

“[Obama] is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who targeted their own country.”

That … wow. She’s talking about Bill Ayers, of course. Yes, he was a leader of the Weathermen, a radical leftist group that declared war against the US government … in 1970, when such sentiment was not altogether rare. (Having the national guard shoot at you, for example, might do that.) Barack was nine years old and halfway around the world at the time. Ayers is currently a distinguished professor of education at Illinois-Chicago and, to put it mildly, not a terrorist. And by “pal around with,” Palin apparently means live three blocks away from, serve on boards of non-profits with, receive a mere $200 in campaign contributions from, and not talk for the last six years to — according to the very NY Times article that Palin cites.

If you were hoping for an election decided on actual issues … well, sorry. It’s clear that Sen. McCain, whether he is directly involved or not, is running a campaign now trailing far enough in the polls that it will try absolutely anything to win. One wonders if, in late October, Palin or another surrogate will play the race card or wonder if he is a Muslim. Of course, on the flip side, whatever there is to be dredged up against McCain now will be. It will be an ugly month to the finish — and one where little of substance will be discussed. Enjoy the media hellscape.
